Week 9 – A week mostly nearer home

Club Visits since July 1                                                  26
Rotary Engagements since July 1                                   69
Official Club Visits with Chicken since July 1  (still only)  1 !!

I finished up last week talking about our weekend with our grandson.  Having overcome the bout of sickness on Satrurday we spent Sunday in the company of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters (good film for children and moderately watchable for adults) and Monday at Woburn Safari Park.

We felt the latter was actually pretty good value and you get really close up to the animals (to be perfectly honest the rhinos were a little close for comfort!)  We escaped with the car intact after the monkey section to find, yes, you guessed it, zebra crossing!!

Tuesday lunchtime at the physically closest club to my home – RC Ruislip-Northwood, and mother club to my own.  Currently having some difficulties attracting & retaining members, but in good spirits and featuring more than 75% of their total members in attendance.  PDG Colin Harris is seen here(R) dispensing advice!  Wishing them all the best for the coming year.

Tuesday evening – off to RC Bourne End & Cookham – a lively crowd with a great evening’s banter good-humoured as ever and under the control of first lady President Maureen.  Nice to hear District Grant recipient Peter Lawrence thanking the club for the opportunity they had given him – “you’ve changed my life” – exactly Peter – that’s what we’re doing this year – Engaging Rotary & Changing Lives

Wednesday – another short trip – and a “home fixture” – my own club RC Elthorne Hillingdon.  Busy night, with the presentation of a cheque for £10,000 to Shooting Star Chase from a brilliantly successful Golf Day, and a sad goodbye to member for 33 years Dan Evans, who’s moving back to wales with his wife Marian.  But also great news – looking like we’ll be having two new members shortly!

Thursday – and a first.  Everyone knows that there’s a distinct possibility that people will use the opportunity of the DG’s visit to find something else to do.  However, it must be unusual for a club to move its meeting when the DG is supposed to be speaking to an entirely different venue and not tell the DG where the meeting is!  Well done RC Slough!  However, their best-laid plans were foiled – we found them and arrived as the meeting was due to start.  Seriously though – a great evening amongst good friends and great Rotarians.

Sunday with a new challenge.  This year’s the first time we’ve had the opportunity to send professionals off to another country to train other people in ways of saving lives, particularly mothers and babies.  So, on the back of an application to refurbish a hospital in Kamuli, Uganda, we’re planning to send a medical team to train midwives and nurses practical skills designed to reduce infant & maternal mortality.  We had an outstanding response of quality applicants and spent Sunday working with them to whittle down our shortlist of 12 (4 doctors and 8 midwives) down to a team of three plus a reserve.  Not sure how it felt for them, but for those of us on the selection team (thanks to all those who gave up their Sunday to do that) it was pretty intensive.  Need also to thank all those from the sponsor clubs who came along to support their candidates.  But a very special thank you to Karen Eveleigh who organised the whole process and delivered a very slick and thorough selection. (Not forgetting Karen’s trusty helpers who kept us fed & watered).  A brilliant example of Rotarians from all over our District pulling together.
