New Rotary Year - First Thoughts!

As we're now entering a new Rotary year, we had our "handover" on Friday (Rotary changes its Principal Officers every year).  At our event (Brunel University Hamilton suite - great venue) I had the opportunity to address the gathering with some thoughts on what we might try to achieve while I hold the post of District Governor.  And here are my thoughts so that more people have a chance to at least read what I had to say:

"I’m constantly surprised by how little impact we as Rotarians make on the consciousness of the general population of the UK. By which I don’t mean that we don’t do anything for them, it’s more how unaware they are of what we do to make the world a better place and more importantly why they should come and help us do so.

Our theme for this year is Engage Rotary, Change Lives. Take “Engage” – if we look up that word in the thesaurus we find almost 30 synonyms – words like Encounter, Attract, Join, Involve, Absorb, Engross, Retain – actually that’s not a bad set of words to use as a strategy for our Membership.  So let’s do those things – let’s use every encounter we have as Rotarians as an opportunity to explain what we do and to attract new members to Rotary and once they’ve joined let’s involve them, and absorb them into the framework of our clubs, so they’re engrossed in what we do and we retain them.

If we do all those things we won’t have a problem with Changing Lives – we’ll change their lives and our lives for the better and we’ll all be able to change the lives of the communities impacted by our Service for the better.  And we may have less of a problem with people knowing what we do – if there’s more of us, that’s more of us to spread the word.  Sounds devastatingly simple, but I know that the reality isn’t quite like that – for a start we’ve got to get our members to Engage with the idea that that’s what we need to do.  And in some clubs that’ll be easier than others.  And it will only happen if we all use our collective will to make it so.  At our District Assembly I felt a real buzz about the place, a gathering of people who wanted to be part of making our District a better place to be a Rotarian, a more dynamic place to be a Rotarian, a more satisfying place to be a Rotarian.

Ten years ago my club held a celebration of its silver jubilee and we made a video including remarks from founder members of the club where they stressed the importance and vitality of Rotary fellowship.  Resorting to my thesaurus again and looking up Fellowship I find words like camaraderie, partnership, solidarity, cooperation and yes, that’s what we need – a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of our society – to do Good in the World.  And I’m not going to miss this opportunity to trumpet the cause of our Rotary Foundation – our charity.  We’ve come a long way in this District in the last few years, we have every right to be very proud of our achievements for our Foundation – we’re approaching the gold standard – the $100 a member every year, let’s keep that going, and let’s make use of it in supporting our projects.

I’d like to draw towards a close now, with a plea to all of you to help me to achieve 100% participation from the Rotarians in the District for our Pounds for Polio project which runs from Monday, yes July 1, until 24 October, World Polio Day.  Why is this important right now?  It’s important that we continue our efforts to complete the Endgame because we have had warnings again this year of what happens if we don’t finish the job.  Outbreaks in Kenya & Somalia which have led to the need to carry out emergency vaccinations of more than 1 million children should serve as a grave reminder of the ongoing need.  Yes, I know we’ve been at it for years, yes I know people are tired of the continued need, but in my view we need to adapt the words of Magnus Magnusson – We’ve started so We’ll finish.  Just to remind you, our objective is to raise £100 for each Rotarian in the District in the next 115 days, just a £1 a day each – not a lot to each of us, but capable of an immense Change in the Lives of others.

And a quick sneaky advert for District Conference 2014 – Torquay March 21st-23rd.  I’m very proud of the exceptional line-up of speakers we’ve already got for you - Arsenal & Scotland goalkeeping legend Bob Wilson, who’ll not only be talking about football but also his charity, the Willow Foundation which makes things happen for terminally ill young adults; transplant games medal winner Richard Burbedge and Paralympic gold medal rower Naomi Riches who’ll both be telling us what it’s like to grow up being different and to overcome those disadvantages.  And Ben Mee who’s taken a broken down zoo & built it up during a time of personal tragedy – yes it was him, not Matt Damon that Bought a Zoo.  We also have Lady Carnarvon on what it’s like living in Downton Abbey and how the temporary hospital storylines were factually based on the earlier Lady Carnarvon.  Not to mention Hudson river plane crash survivor Larry Snodgrass and Ray Burman on surviving 35 years in the police – make sure you put the date in your diary and come – better still, make sure you bring along someone from your club who’s never been to a District Conference and show them why they need to be there – after all, if it hadn’t been for District Conference I may never have joined!

I’m looking forward to this year immensely.  I know I lead a terrific bunch of people committed to improve the lives of others.  If I can help you to do that, please let me know and if I can I will. Let’s go out there and have fun Engaging Rotary & Changing Lives."

Be Better Known Campaign Comes to an End

Done it!  Having set myself the task of visiting all of the 63 clubs in Rotary District 1090 before I become District Governor on 1 July I've been to Burnham last week and Bicester & Thame this week.  All interesting stops - Burnham & Bicester were their Club Assemblies, where they're setting out their plans for the coming year and at Thame last night they were making significant charitable donations to a bevy of charities, including the Thames Valley & Chilterns Air Ambulance, SERV (volunteer Blood and organ transport), Sharing Life Trust, Hearing Dogs, Thame Day Care and the Meadowcroft Care Home, President Bob's chosen charity.

So, now a week's break and then I'm into the whirlwind that will be my series of Official visits to all 63 clubs - well at least they'll know who I am!

Another month goes by - and only a few weeks to go before "WE'RE OFF"

Rotary International District Assembly passed off superbly on 11th May - great team effort by all of those involved in supporting the 63 clubs in our District - nice atmosphere and seemingly well-received from the feedback we've had.  We have some exciting plans during the coming Rotary year and it's good to find our members in good spirits.

My club visit count has now reached 60 - just 3 more to go before I start my "official" visits on 1 July.  During the last month I've been to Burford & Windrush Valley, Hungerford, Bracknell and Haddenham - all super clubs and great people.

Been a busy month since I last updated you here (although you can get more frequent updates by following me on Twitter @JohnCGreening).  My wife Joan has had three plays premiering during the month - "Life Imitating Art" - a two-hander at the Pump House Theatre, Watford; "Mistresses", at the Theatre on the Steps, Bridgnorth (now touring) and "DIY" which had it's world amateur premiere by the Pepperpot Players in Upton upon Severn last week.  So a few miiles racked up there - but all terrific shows and well received by their audiences.

Tinges of disappointment in other news - the RC Elthorne-Hillingdon darts team were defeated in the semi-finals of the District 1090 darts competition - guess we might have to resort to practicising at some point next year!  And on Monday 27th May we watched Watford FC narrowly beaten by Crystal Palace in the Championship play-off final at Wembley - in truth a poor game settled by a played-for penalty which looked the only way either team would score!

Onwards & upwards!!

Planning reaching Crescendo!

Last time I wrote was in the aftermath of my momentous birthday party.  Shortly afterwards I suffered a diary/contacts meltdown - finally cutting the electronic ties with my erstwhile supplier/employer/client comveniently removed all of my diary and contacts.  I do not recommend this!!  Happily I managed to retrieve (almost) everything thanks to a couple of clever pieces of software to suck things out of one's phone.  Think I'm almost back to normal - haven't missed any meetings (yet) and haven't noticed anyone's details missing (famous last words).  It was, however, a fairly time-consuming distraction!

Mostly over the last couple of weeks I've been getting ready for the "big do" - our District's annual Assembly, where those of us supporting the wonderful work of the 63 clubs in our District set out our stall of the ways in which we plan to help them and some directional suggestions from us as the new teams get ready to take up office in their own clubs (in Rotary we change the President and "management team" of each club & District every year on 1 July).  And our District Assembly is this Saturday 11 May - think I'm just about ready - expecting about 250 people.

Been to a few more clubs in the District recently, my latest visit yesterday to Rotary Club of Reading takes my tally up to 56, just 7 more to go to complete the set before we go round again from July 1!

Weather improves & so does my mood!

Yes, wonderful what a couple of decent weeks can do.  Temperatures are now getting back to the sort of thing we'd expect for this time of year and with that has brought a general felling of well-being and happiness!

Last time I wrote I talked of the foul weather we had for our Incoming Presidents Training (PETS).  Because we had a few people miss the session we ran a "mop-up" session this week when about a dozen came together for a re-run of the material led by me, our District -Governor for 2014-2015 Tim Cowling & District Secretary Greg Wilkinson.  Seemed to go well and hopefully most of our guys are now set up for next year.

The previous weekend we went up to Harrogate for the annual Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) conference.  Stirring stuff - a combination of great & inspiring speakers, including Tim Smit from the Eden Project, Simon Weston & WHO's Bruce Aylward.  And great news for Our Rotary District 1090 - one of our nominated groups was selected as a winner of a Young Citizen award and we won three, yes, three national awards, for development of Interact Clubs (Rotary for the 12-18's), for having the best online presence as a District (over 28 others) and for our newest club, Maidenhead Bridge the honour of having the best club  online presence (over more than 1800 others).  Nothing like a bit of pride to send us off feeling good!!

Oh, & yes, there was something else.  On Wednesday 10 April I officially became a grumpy old man - becoming a state pensioner.  So off I went to our Rotary meeting as normal, to find that nothing was normal at all.  Began to smell a rat when I saw a few familiar cars in what was for them an unfamiliar place and was greeted by 100 people who'd arrived for my surprise birthday party surreptitiously organised my by wife Joan and super family (daughters Jo & Emma, son-in-law Alex and grandson Edward).  Friends from most areas of my life were there and we all had a great time.  I shall remember it for a long time.  There's a couple of pictures here and more on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/organize/?start_tab=one_set72157633256140812

Now into April - but winter's still here

Actually today seems like it might be a little warmer than of late.  For those reading from outside the UK we've been suffering a prolonged spell of cold & dismal weather in what seems like a never-ending series of windy and perishing.  (I appreciate that for those from further afield this is nothing out of the ordinary!).

So, what's been up since last month? Well my club visit count is up to 52, just 11 to go now - still appreciating the warm welcome I receive and beginning to feel like I have a reasonably good grasp on most of the District.  Also had the great pleasure of meeting one of the speakers lined-up for our Conference next March - Naomi Riches - gold medal winner in the Mixed Sculls at the Paralympic Games - super lady - great company.

Almost two-thirds of those who will be leading their Rotary Club as Presidents attended our President-Elect Training a couple of weeks ago, braving the March snow (told you we'd had it bad!) - a terrific group of people looking forward to a fantsatic year starting July 1.

My club, Elthorne-Hillingdon, had its' annual weekend away the same weekend - to Stratford on Avon, which was pretty in the snow - we found the crocuses that RC Stratford upon Avon had planted 2 years ago for End Polio Now!

We went away for Easter to the Isle of Wight which was nice & relaxing - still b****y cold, but a nice break.

And then this weekend I've been mailing all 530+ of my fellow District Governors Elect to try & persuade them to join District 1090 in raising funds for Polio Eradication from July to October.  I'll be talkkinmg more about this over the coming months.  Amazingly good email address list I was sent - only 3 bounces out of 534 - well done Rotary International!

Even I'm shocked now!

This seems to be a recurring theme - me apologising for a lack of posts!!  Three months - absolutely shocking!!

Since last I wrote I've been away for Christmas - on a cruise including the Holy Land, which was spectacular - can't beat going away for Xmas with all the family and having someone else do all the work!  We actually spent Xmas Day in Turkey, so yes, we had Turkey in Turkey!

After we got back on 2nd Jan we had only a week before setting off for the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego.  This gathering of the entire class of District Governors for 2013-2014 for a week of inspirational talks and training from senior Rotary leaders is an unfiorgettable experience.  Mind you since we got back it feels like our feet haven't touched the ground - talks to our team of Past District Governors - a great source of advice & guidnace, the splendid team of people who will be our Diustrict support team for the coming year, helping me with the things we need to do to help our 63 local clubs serving their communities and the first of two sessions with all of the incoming Presidents of those 63 clubs (the seciond is coming up in three weeks time.  Throw into the mix a weekend away with all the other 28 incoming District Governors in Britain & Ireland, plus our annual District Conference in the weekend just gone & life is quite hectic.

Throw into the mix my continuing round of visits to clubs I haven't been to yet and you perhaps get the picture - I'm now into the last 25% - another 16 to go - looking forward to it - great reception everywhere I've been.

In darts news, our club has progressed to the next round - without throwing an arrow - our opponents scratched - (such is our reputation?) - another round looms this month so we'll see how the quarter final goes

Perhaps it's time for an early Easter resolution - write more often!  Don't forget, you can follow me on Twitter @JohnCGreening
